Course Description:
This Spanish 1 course is an introduction to the study of the target language and its culture. It allows students to perform the most basic functions of the language and to become familiar with some elements of its culture. The emphasis is placed on the development of the four skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) with special attention given to the listening and speaking skills first within a given context extending outside of the classroom setting when possible. The context focuses on the adolescents' lives, needs, and experiences and includes an exposure to everyday customs and lifestyles. Grammar is integrated throughout and is selected according to the language needs (functions). This middle school program is sequential and expanded upon grades 7th and 8th.

Grading Policy:
Homework/ class work 33%
Binder check, notes and handouts. Daily work and homework is checked during class; it will be graded weekly.
Oral participation 33%
Use of Spanish in class, self assessment rubric, weekly participation assessment. oral quizzes.
Assessment 33%
Chapter test, written test.
Class expectations:
1. llegar a tiempo y tener materiales (Come to class on time and prepared to learn)
2. Escuchar a los demás (Listen to instructions and respect each other in turn or opinion)
3. Pedir permiso (Students will use Spanish to ask for permission and participate in the class)
4. Hacer tareas (Students will bring their assignments on time)
If students choose not to follow these expectations the consequences below will be applied:
1st time– Verbal warning, relocation and 1 participation point deducted.
2nd time– Phone call home or e-mail, and 2 participation points. deducted.
3rd time– Lunch detention, phone call or e-mail, and 2 participation points deducted.
4th time– Referral to the deans, phone call home or e-mail, and 4 participation points deducted.
